Careers: Veterinarian Technician

Job Descriptions:

Veterinarian technicians assist licensed veterinarians in clinical, administrative and medical procedures. Opening and running a veterinary clinic is an exceptionally complex operation, not unlike operating a medical practice; thus, veterinarian technicians perform the duties equivalent to those of nurses and doctors. Such duties include greeting concerned pet owners, assisting with front desk paperwork, performing basic medical diagnostic tests and completing routine laboratory tests.

Not all veterinarian technicians work with just dogs and cats. The focus and location of the veterinarian clinic determines the type of animals that the technicians work with. For example, in rural areas, veterinarian technicians work with cows, pigs, sheep and other larger farm animals; whereas, in urban areas, technicians are likely to work with dogs, cats, mice, rats, fish, birds, frogs and reptiles.

Working at a veterinarians office can be very rewarding, however, on a day to day basis, the work of a veterinarian technician may be very unpleasant, emotionally difficult and dangerous. Typically technicians work a standard 40-work week, however, depending on location, there may be weekend and late night hours to cover emergency care services.
